The Window With No Buttons

If you've spent your career in design, you're probably used to working on a canvas. Most projects have a visual form: objects you can select, layers you can rearrange, and elements you can watch change as you work on…

One border, five components

On 29 September I opened a small task in my own design system: make the outline Button’s border pass WCAG 1.4.11,

Step 2 for Scout: turning the mockups' design system into code. Colors, type, icons, buttons, screens, transitions: it all lives in a Storybook. I had fun with topographic shapes and WebGL. The contour lines drift slowly, and 5 orange peaks change places on every load.

Happy Halloween (for tomorrow)! 🎃 It's the perfect opportunity to talk about design system components that get stitched together like some kind of monster. 😱 This was such a fun article to work on with Anna.

I use a design system model with reusable high-level components that compose plain SwiftUI views. This lets me adapt the app to iPhone Duo or iPad by modifying a few shared components. swiftwithmajid.com/2026/04/06/b...

Google's A2UI can now have the model write a short "Express" format, which SDK code compiles into validated UI from your component catalog. Google says up to 3x faster than raw JSON. My take: it's a design system with a compiler as the reviewer. Pick the mode per screen. #AIAgents #webdev

Nobody decides to break a design system. It drifts. A hex that should be a token. A renamed Figma variable. A component forked "just for this page". Docs nobody opens. Which one do you see most on your team? Full article: fenly.io/blog/design-system-drift

"We bought a component library. Why do we still have design problems?" Components are the visible part. Tokens, patterns, content rules and an owner sit underneath. Founders: when someone says "we have a design system", what do they actually mean?

10 design systems benchmarked with tests that fail when a component is too slow. Web Awesome opened a country selector in 137ms, only 76ms behind than the top performer. Not bad, but we can do even better! Thanks for the open tests, @denodell.bsky.social denodell.com/blog/design-...

I did a deep dive into the performance of ten popular design systems, and wrote Playwright tests that fail when a component is too slow. They're open source, so you can run them against your own design system, or measure the ten yourself. denodell.com/blog/design-...
